How to Relieve Kidney Stone Pain?

Kidney stone pain can be easily treated by using different methods. The most common of which are medications prescribed by the doctor. There are also natural home remedies available to treat kidney stone pain.


Water is the best treatment to ease kidney stone pain. Kidney stone pain is usually a result of dehydration. One should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. If you are experiencing kidney stone pain, it is recommended to increase your daily water intake from 8 glasses to at least 12 glasses of water per day. Doing this will help relieve your kidney stone pain, flush out the toxins through your urine, and change the color of your urine to a light or clear yellow color.

Pain Relievers

The doctor may recommend pain relievers to help ease the kidney stone pain as if there is discomfort in letting stones pass. The typical pain relievers recommended by the doctors to treat kidney pain are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which includes ibuprofen such as Motrin and Advil, acetaminophen such as Tylenol, and naproxen sodium such as Aleve. These kinds of medicines are available over the counter but it is still recommended to take these medicines under a doctor’s advice or prescription. Doctors may also prescribe stronger pain medicine if needed.

Homeopathic Remedies

Another option is to relieve kidney stone pain is to take homeopathic medicines. These medicines are usually available at health food stores or even at groceries in some cases.

  • Ocimum is a remedy for kidney stone pain coupled with vomiting and/or nausea.
  • Colocynthis is a remedy for kidney stone pain that relieves the pain whenever you bend or lean forward.
  • Berberis is a remedy for kidney stone pain that is felt mainly in the groin area.

There are also kidney cleansing kits that are available in health food stores or online. The kit contains supplements for cleansing the kidneys. These supplements contain herbal ingredients that help in allowing kidney stones to be flushed out of the body such as green tea, apple cider vinegar, etc.

Fresh Coconut Water

Coconut is known to be a natural diuretic which makes one urinate easily and helps flush out toxins and bacteria from the urinary tract. Fresh coconut water can prevent and cure urinary tract infections.

It is necessary to drink fresh coconut water, one that has come out of a freshly chopped coconut as it easily loses its nutrients once it is already exposed to outside temperature. Drinking the ones that are bottled or canned are not recommended as they contain preservatives which are not good for the body.

Kidney Beans

Kidney beans are a great source of magnesium that helps relieve the symptoms linked with kidney stones.

Simply remove the beans from inside the pods and boil the pods in hot water for about 6 hours. Strain the liquid using a cheesecloth. Let it cool down and drink it throughout the day. This will help ease kidney stone pain.


Magnesium supplements help improve symptoms of kidney stone pain. There is a significant improvement in the symptoms of kidney pain based on studies on people who took magnesium supplements despite having recurring kidney stones.

Organic Celery

Celery is a good kidney tonic and urine-promoter. Celery also has antispasmodic properties that can help relieve pain caused by spasms in the tissues in and around the kidneys. Celery can be eaten as a vegetable or turned into a fresh celery juice and celery seeds can be used as a spice or as a tea. The regular intake of celery may discourage the formation of kidney stones.

Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, Lemon Juice, and Olive Oil

The combination of raw apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and olive oil may be one of the most effective home remedies for kidney stones. Each of these ingredients contains elements that break larger stones into smaller ones to help flush them out of the body easily. These elements also prevent stones from forming.

Mix 2 ounces of organic lemon juice and 2 ounces of organic olive oil. Lemon juice can be made from extracting the juice out of fresh lemons. Drink the mixture straight and follow it with a glass of water. Wait for 30 minutes. Squeeze 1/2 lemon juice into a glass of water and add a tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar. Drink the mixture. Drink throughout the day.

Do not take olive oil if you have problems digesting oil as this may cause more damage than healing.

Medical Therapy

Aside from pain-killers, the doctor may recommend antibiotics and other medicines to help pass the kidney stones. These medications which are also called alpha blockers relax the muscles in the ureter which helps the kidney stones pass more quickly and with lesser pain.

Green Tea

Green tea helps prevent kidney stones from forming and it also relieves kidney stone pain. It is recommended to drink 2 to 4 cups of green tea a day to help ease kidney stone pain.

Use dried green tea leaves to make green tea. Place a teaspoon of green tea leaves into a teabag or tea infuser. Pour hot water over it. Let it simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove the tea bag or infuser and drink.

White Willow Bark Tea

White willow bark has similar ingredients to aspirin and may give the same pain relieving effects as aspirin.

Place a teaspoon of dried herbs into a teabag or tea infuser and put in a mug. Pour a cup of boiling water over it. Let it steep for 5 to 10 minutes. Remove the tea bag or infuser and drink. Drink just one cup and observe the effects. There are some studies that show that white willow bark is as strong as aspirin.

This is not recommended for children below 16 years old. Another precaution is that white willow bark may cause stomach irritation for some.
